Myths and Community Stories about Coban Rondo Waterfall

Coban rondo is a Javanese language which means Widow’s Waterfall in Indonesian. This tourist spot is named so not without reason, according to stories circulating in the local community. In ancient times this place was the place of death of the husband Dewi Anjarwati, whose name was Raden Baron Kusumo. Starting from the marriage of Dewi Anjarwati and Raden Baron Kusuma who was 36 days old, the Goddess invited her husband to visit Dewi Anjarwati’s parents who were in Gunung Kawi.

Meanwhile, according to local people’s beliefs. It is forbidden to travel long before the age of 40 days of marriage, but both the goddess and the raden do not heed the taboo. As a result, while on the way to Dewi Anjarwati’s parents’ house, the group of Raden Baron Kusuma was intercepted by a group from Joko Lelono. Seeing the beauty of Dewi Anjarwati, Joko Lelono forced Raden Baron Kusumo to give up his wife. Of course the Raden refused firmly.

As a result, the battle to protect the Goddess was unavoidable. When there was a battle between Raden Baron Kusumo’s group and Joko Lelono’s group, the Raden ordered his guards to secure Dewi Anjarwati by hiding behind a waterfall. But luck was not on Raden Baron Kusumo’s side, so Raden died in the battle. And now the Goddess becomes a widow or Rondo in the age of marriage which is still in a matter of days. So the local community named the waterfall Coban Rondo.
